Screen Printing

Screen Printing is the process of pressing ink through a stencilled mesh screen to create a printed design. It’s a popular technique used in a whole range of different industries, so even if you've never heard of the term before today, it’s likely that you’ve worn or used a screen-printed product at some point without even realising. The process is sometimes called serigraphy or silk screen printing, but all of these names refer to the same basic method.

Screen Printing is an effective technique for creating bold canvases, posters and artwork, but the method can also be used to print fabrics and textiles, so it's great for creating all sorts of custom clothing and products. Traditionally it is used for t-shirt printing in high volumes or quantities, so is ideal for promotional t-shirts etc. usually the minimum quantity is 25 items on each print run. A screen has to be made for each colour in the design so the more colours in the design the more expensive the job becomes, so jobs have to be quoted on a case-by-case basis.

Often regarded as slightly more robust and wash resistant than vinyl printing methodologies, the main negative is that the detail is not always as sharp and crisp, with the print sometimes having a slight rough texture. If you have low numbers of garments to be printed then Screen Printing will not be offered to you, and it may be that for volumes in the 100’s we would still utilise Direct To Film printing depending on the specifics of the job.
