Portwest Flame Resistant Fabric Technologies
Portwest develops specialist fabrics and protective clothing ranges to address different workplace hazards. Understanding the differences between treated and inherently flame resistant materials can help when selecting suitable protective workwear.
Portwest Bizflame & Bizweld
Portwest Bizflame is a range of flame resistant fabrics used across protective coveralls, jackets, trousers and other industrial garments. Different Bizflame constructions offer combinations of comfort, durability and protection, with selected products providing anti-static and electric arc protection.
The Portwest Bizweld range is particularly suited to welding and related industrial applications, featuring flame resistant cotton fabrics designed to provide protection against relevant heat and flame hazards.
Portwest Modaflame
Portwest Modaflame garments use inherently flame resistant fibre blends, meaning their flame resistant properties are part of the fibre composition rather than relying solely on a surface treatment. The range includes protective clothing designed for demanding industrial environments, with selected garments offering anti-static and electric arc protection.
Portwest Araflame
Portwest Araflame protective clothing uses specialist inherently flame resistant aramid-based fabrics. Designed for applications requiring high-performance protection, selected Araflame garments combine lightweight construction with resistance to heat and flame.
Portwest FR Workwear Safety Standards
When choosing flame retardant workwear, it is important to understand the safety standards associated with each garment. Portwest manufactures protective clothing certified to a range of European and international standards, depending on the product and its intended application.
- EN ISO 11612: Protective clothing designed to provide protection against heat and flame.
- EN ISO 11611: Protective clothing for welding and allied processes, including protection against certain welding-related hazards.
- EN 1149-5: Protective clothing with electrostatic dissipative properties, intended for use as part of a properly grounded system.
- EN 61482-2: Protective clothing against the thermal hazards of an electric arc, with testing methods and performance ratings specified by the applicable standards.
Not all Portwest flame retardant garments carry the same certifications. Always check individual product specifications, garment labels and applicable protection ratings, including arc ratings where relevant, before selecting clothing for a particular workplace hazard.
Choosing the Right Flame Retardant Workwear
When selecting Portwest FR clothing, consider the hazards present in your working environment, the level of protection required and the suitability of each garment for your intended application. Workers exposed to welding hazards may require different protective clothing from those working around electrical equipment or in environments with electrostatic risks.
Comfort, fit and compatibility with other PPE are also important considerations. Protective clothing should be appropriately sized, worn correctly and maintained according to the manufacturer's instructions. Follow the garment's specified washing and care guidance, avoiding bleach, fabric softeners or other treatments where prohibited, as these may affect protective performance.
